ISU SSP20 Preparations Gear Up in Shenzhen, China

The International Space University ISU's Space Studies Program (SSP) will be hosted in Shenzhen University in 2020, following its upcoming edition in Strasbourg, France. Between 6-10 May 2019, SSP20 Director Goktug Karacalioglu and SSP20 Senior Academic Advisor Prof. Gongling Sun visited Shenzhen, China.

During their visit, the ISU delegation was welcomed by the Local Organizing Committee members from Shenzhen Space Science and Technology Institute, Shenzhen Talents Association for Aeronautics and Space, Shenzhen Aviation Association, and Shenzhen University. They held several preparatory meetings and made site surveys.

In addition to the academic and logistical planning sessions, the delegation visited academic facilities of the Shenzhen University as well as several off-campus event venues. Additional meetings with Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of China Academy of Sciences and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) has been held to discuss academic personnel support opportunities for the upcoming program. The delegation also visited the Wenchang Launch Center located in Hainan Island and discussed collaboration options.

SSP20 Director Goktug Karacalioglu describes the visit as a successfully completed milestone for the program and states:

"With its hundreds of ISU graduates over the years, China ranks in the top-3 of our alumni statistics, however only one ISU program has ever been hosted in this beautiful country. 13 years after its presence in Beijing, we are bringing SSP back, this time to the city of Shenzhen: the Silicon Valley of China. We are very happy to already see the dedication of our local partners to make this return a very memorable one. We are also very impressed by the modern and eco-friendly infrastructure of Shenzhen City which flawlessly harmonizes traditional life and high-tech life style. Our participants, without doubt, will find themselves surrounded with a very international and intercultural atmosphere next summer, just as the SSP itself."

In the upcoming weeks, ISU will publish the "Call for Chairs, Visiting Lecturers, and Staff" for SSP20. Following the appointment of these teams, the next visit of the ISU delegation to Shenzhen is planned for December 2019, where detailed curriculum planning meetings will take place.
