UNISEC Global Meetings Offer Another Networking Opportunity for ISU MSS19

The International Space University (ISU) hosted the 6th UNISEC-Global Meeting and a short course of HEPTA-Sat hands-on training at its Central Campus from 19 – 23 November 2018. Rei Kawashima, an ISU SSP and MSS alumnae and ISU MSS19 student Marc Abi Fadel report.

UNISEC-Global is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization consisting in local chapters across the world. It facilitates and promotes practical space development projects in academic institutions. UNISEC-Global's vision is: “By the end of 2030, let's create a world where university students can participate in practical space projects in all countries."

The collaboration between ISU and UNISEC-Global was initiated by Rei Kawashima, Secretary General of UNISEC-Global. Rei graduated from the Space Studies Program (SSP) in 1994 and ISU’s Master of Space Studies (MSS) in 1996 – the first ever ISU master class. Rei Kawashima said:

“Planning the collaborative event started when I met Prof Chris Welch, Director of ISU’s MSS at UNCOPUOS meeting in February in 2018. It is a great pleasure and honor to organize our annual conference at ISU where I studied more than 20 years ago.”

People from the space sector, whether from universities or from the corporate world, attended the conference. The Master of Space Studies students were also in attendance.
MSS19 student, Marc Abi Fadel, shares his impressions:

“During the UNISEC 6th Global Meeting, I was part of the group discussion on "Balancing Reliability and Cost for University CubeSat Projects". During this discussion, the team and I brainstormed key recommendations to improve reliability of university CubeSat projects while ensuring costs can be maintained to a relatively acceptable level. Any project manager knows that Schedule, Cost and Performance need to be balanced to mitigate risks of failure, malfunctions, cost overrun, and schedule overrun. The group discussion focused on several topics such as identifying sources of project funding, defining mission objectives and success, aligning university research philosophy, streamlining assembly, integration and testing phases, leveraging external expertise, ensuring consistent project life cycle reviews and reducing export complexity for university CubeSat projects.
Additionally, I was part of the Gender Diversity Panel, which raised awareness regarding gender biases within the Space field and society as a whole.”

The meeting was successfully concluded with 115 participants from more than 30 countries. The expectations expressed by Juan De Dalmau, the president of ISU, during the opening ceremony were met:
“The chemical reaction occurred in the meetings organized by two institutions that have similar objectives and will make good impacts for the futures.”

ISU thanks Lockheed Martin for its support and is proud to have collaborated with UNISEC on this Global meeting which offered another opportunity for the MSS19 cohort to meet new people from the space sector. And further enlarge their network.
