The International Space University (ISU) community is deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Roland Doré who was the president of ISU from 1994 to 1998. He passed away on 16 July 2024 at 86 years old.
Dr. Roland Doré, a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique in Montréal in 1960, furthered his academic pursuits with both a master’s degree in 1965 and PhD from Stanford University in mechanical engineering in 1969. Upon completing his doctorate, he returned to Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal, where he ascended the ranks from professor to Director and Board Member, showcasing his aptitude for academic management.
Dr. Doré’s reputation as a distinguished scientist and researcher led to his appointment as the Director General of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). During his tenure, he implemented significant reforms that enhanced the agency’s operations and impact.
Following his successful stint at CSA, Dr. Doré was appointed president of the International Space University in Strasbourg. Known for his congeniality, Dr. Doré was regarded by staff and colleagues as not only a leader but also a true gentleman who always had a kind word for each of us.
His accolades include the Officer of the Order of Canada, Knight of the National Order of Quebec, and honorary doctorates from several prestigious institutions. He also received the Frank-D.-Melina Medal from the International Astronautical Federation.
ISU President Nicolas Peter said:
“Roland Doré leaves behind a remarkable contribution in the space field as the president of the Canadian Space Agency from 1992 to 1994, and later as the president of our institution, the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France. During his tenure at ISU he paved the way for hundreds of ISU students and participants. He was instrumental in the success of ISU’s Space Studies Program, overseeing sessions in Barcelona SSP94, Stockholm SSP95, Vienna SSP96, Houston SSP97, and Cleveland SSP98.”
Dr. Doré frequently visited Strasbourg even after his presidency ended, often coinciding his trips with visits to his son, Eric Doré, an ISU alumnus and the then-head of the university’s admissions office. This blend of personal and professional visits underscored his deep affection for the university.
Beyond his illustrious career, Dr. Doré dedicated significant energy to his passion for nature. His post-academic endeavors included philanthropic activities, notably founding ‘La Grande Boucle Tremblant’, a challenging triathlon event in Canada that spans 75 kilometers of cycling, running, and cross-country skiing.
The thoughts of the ISU faculty, staff, and alumni community are with his family during this difficult time, particularly his son Eric.
