ISU joins the Space for Climate Observatory

The International Space University has become a member of the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) after signing its charter and pledging to dedicate its expertise toward educating individuals about the benefits of space applications in the fight against climate change.

The Space for Climate Observatory is an international initiative launched on June 17th 2019, at the Paris International Air Show. The initiative aims to gather public and private entities involved in the Earth Observation sector and to direct their resources toward the monitoring and mitigation of the effects of climate change. In order to make the best use of satellite data and digital technologies for climate action, the CNES-led SCO works to coordinate international efforts to support the emergence of operational tools for climate monitoring, mitigation, and adaptation addressed to decision-makers and the general public.

SCO members are the Signatories of the Charter on the establishment of the Space for Climate Observatory. ISU signed in July 2024 after having its membership accepted by the SCO leadership in the Spring of 2024. ISU is the first educational institution to become a member and joins a list of prestigious signatories and focal points representing major space organizations from around the world.

ISU’s Acting President Nicolas Peter stated that “Climate Change is a major issue impacting everyone. Data from European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) shows that temperature records are being beaten continuously and that future generations will experience significant impacts. ISU becoming the first educational institution to join the SCO is an important step in educating people about the benefits of space applications for understanding and adapting to climate change.”

ISU will begin discussions with SCO in September 2024 regarding the development of educational initiatives targeting the institution’s diverse student and alumni base.
